Quality Initiative Indiana Chapter-ACC Pursues Cardiovascular Informatics Project While
the death rate from cardiovascular disease in the US has declined over the
past decade, certain geographic regions have benefited less than others.
Almost certainly, this is in part due to the uneven application of
proven cardiovascular therapies. This fact is strikingly apparent in the
State of Indiana, which has a cardiovascular mortality 7% above the
national average. Preventable
adverse drug events alone affect nearly one million patients nationally
per year, and some 7,000 die of them. The
Indiana Chapter of the American College of Cardiology is striving, through
a statewide cardiovascular informatics quality program, to change these
alarming statistics. This project is known as the
Cardiovascular Informatics Center of Excellence: Computer Order Entry
System with Practice Guideline Decision Support Medication Error Reduction
Project. This
system will provide decision support and safety controls for healthcare
providers in selecting optimal medication and therapy, through a computer
physician order entry system (CPOE) that includes embedded practice
guidelines, thus reducing physician errors by bringing guidelines to the
point of order entry. In
addition, patients will become more involved in their care through an
encounter outcome document (list of diagnosis, medications,
allergy/intolerances and lifestyle instructions) as well as training on
accessing their personal information on-line.
And the Cardiovascular Informatics Center will generate a
confidential provider-specific report which will allow each physician to
compare his or her performance with “best practices”. This
project will focus on patient diagnoses of atrial fibrillation, congestive
heart failure (CHF) and care after myocardial infarction (MI) in an
outpatient clinic setting. It is being conducted in partnership with ACC, the
Northeast Indiana Innovation Center, Parkview Health Systems, the Indiana
State Health Department, the Indiana University School of Medicine and the
Indiana University School of Informatics.
The Indiana-ACC Board of Directors met on March 29, 2003, and developed the following strategies & initiatives. The Indiana-ACC is a resource network committed to improving the cardiovascular health of all Hoosiers by strengthening the quality of cardiovascular clinical and business practices. Strategies:
